The type of precipitation that reaches the ground depends largely on temperature conditions both inside the cloud and in the air column below it. Clouds forming in such air may develop a number of large solution droplets long before the tops of the clouds reach temperatures favourable to the formation of ice crystals.

Snowflakes
The shape of the snowflake is determined broadly by the temperature and humidity at which it is formed. These aggregates are snowflakes, and are usually the type of ice particle that falls to the ground. These large crystals are an efficient source of precipitation, since they fall through the atmosphere due to their mass, and may collide and stick together in clusters, or aggregates. They often bounce when they hit the ground, and generally do not freeze into a solid mass unless mixed with freezing rain. The fall rate of very small droplets is negligible, hence clouds do not fall out of the sky; precipitation will only occur when these coalesce into larger drops. Evaporative cooling occurs when moisture is added to the air through evaporation, which forces the air temperature to cool to its wet-bulb temperature, or until it reaches saturation. Water vapor normally begins to condense on condensation nuclei such as dust, ice, and salt in order to form clouds.
